For five years, I applied for grants.
Over and over again—filling out applications, telling my story, hoping that someone would see the vision behind my business. And for five years, nothing came from it. No emails. No approvals. Just silence. But I didn’t stop.
Then one day, I received an email saying I had been selected as a recipient of the Backing Small Businesses Grant, supported by American Express in partnership with Main Street America.
And honestly… I thought it was a scam.
I was excited, but also nervous. I double checked everything, reread the email multiple times, and couldn’t fully believe it until it was confirmed. After years of trying, it finally happened, it was real.
And it changed everything.
More Than Just a Grant…
This wasn’t just $10,000.
This was validation.
As a first-generation Mexican-American, I didn’t grow up with a roadmap to entrepreneurship. I became a teen mom at 17, and I didn’t take the traditional path. There were so many moments in my life that could have held me back but instead, they pushed me forward.
Building my business hasn’t been easy. It’s been long nights, sacrifices, and figuring things out on my own. But I kept going. I kept showing up.
And this grant reminded me that all of it mattered.
A Dream Turned Into Reality
One of my biggest goals for my storefront was getting a new outdoor sign.
It might seem small to some people, but for me, it was everything.
My shop is located further down the block, and I’ve always wanted a way to draw more attention; especially from tourists passing through. I wanted something that would make people stop, look, and walk just a little further to discover Tiny Trends.
Because of this grant, I was able to make that happen.
That sign is more than just a business upgrade it’s a symbol. A symbol of growth, of believing in myself, and of what can happen when you don’t give up.
